Responsive Reading: Colossians 1 : 3, 4, 9-13

3.     We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,

4.     Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints.

9.     For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

10.     That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11.     Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

12.     Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13.     Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.

Lesson Sermon

The Bible

1. Job 32 : 8 (there)

8     …there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

2. Psalm 119 : 97-100

97     O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

98     Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.

99     I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

100     I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

3. Mark 1 : 1

1     The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;

4. Matthew 13 : 1 (Jesus) only, 1 (sat), 2 (to 1st ,), 10, 13 (to :), 15, 16

1     …Jesus … sat by the sea side.

2     And great multitudes were gathered together unto him,

10     And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

13     Therefore speak I to them in parables:

15     For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

16     But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

5. John 8 : 31-34 (to 1st ,), 37, 42 (If)-47

31     Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32     And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33     They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

34     Jesus answered them,

37     I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

42     …If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

43     Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.

44     Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

45     And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

46     Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

47     He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

6. John 13 : 1

1     Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

7. John 14 : 6 (to saith), 12, 13, 16, 17, 25, 26

6     Jesus saith…

12     Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

13     And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

16     And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17     Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

25     These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

26     But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

8. Acts 2 : 1-8, 12-18, 21

1     And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2     And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3     And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4     And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5     And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

6     Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

7     And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilæans?

8     And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

12     And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

13     Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

14     But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judæa, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

15     For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

16     But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

17     And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

18     And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

21     And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

9. II Timothy 2 : 7

7     Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

1. 350 : 6-23

To understand all our Master’s sayings as recorded in the New Testament, sayings infinitely important, his followers must grow into that stature of manhood in Christ Jesus which enables them to interpret his spiritual meaning. Then they know how Truth casts out error and heals the sick. His words were the offspring of his deeds, both of which must be understood. Unless the works are comprehended which his words explained, the words are blind.

The Master often refused to explain his words, because it was difficult in a material age to apprehend spiritual Truth. He said: “This people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.”

2. 186 : 28-5

Mortal mind is ignorant of self, or it could never be self-deceived. If mortal mind knew how to be better, it would be better. Since it must believe in something besides itself, it enthrones matter as deity. The human mind has been an idolater from the beginning, having other gods and believing in more than the one Mind.

As mortals do not comprehend even mortal existence, how ignorant must they be of the all- knowing Mind and of His creations.

3. 292 : 19-2

Explaining the origin of material man and mortal mind, Jesus said: “Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father, the devil [evil], and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

This carnal material mentality, misnamed mind, is mortal. Therefore man would be annihilated, were it not for the spiritual real man’s indissoluble connection with his God, which Jesus brought to light. In his resurrection and ascension, Jesus showed that a mortal man is not the real essence of manhood, and that this unreal material mortality disappears in presence of the reality.

4. 588 : 7-8

HOLY GHOST. Divine Science; the development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love.

5. 43 : 3-10

The magnitude of Jesus’ work, his material disappearance before their eyes and his reappearance, all enabled the disciples to understand what Jesus had said. Heretofore they had only believed; now they understood. The advent of this understanding is what is meant by the descent of the Holy Ghost, — that influx of divine Science which so illuminated the Pentecostal Day and is now repeating its ancient history.

6. 46 : 31 (by)-7

…by all they had witnessed and suffered, they were roused to an enlarged understanding of divine Science, even to the spiritual interpretation and discernment of Jesus’ teachings and demonstrations, which gave them a faint conception of the Life which is God. They no longer measured man by material sense. After gaining the true idea of their glorified Master, they became better healers, leaning no longer on matter, but on the divine Principle of their work.

7. 271 : 11-19

In Latin the word rendered disciple signifies student; and the word indicates that the power of healing was not a supernatural gift to those learners, but the result of their cultivated spiritual understanding of the divine Science, which their Master demonstrated by healing the sick and sinning. Hence the universal application of his saying: “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me [understand me] through their word.”

8. 141 : 4-9

Few understand or adhere to Jesus’ divine precepts for living and healing. Why? Because his precepts require the disciple to cut off the right hand and pluck out the right eye, — that is, to set aside even the most cherished beliefs and practices, to leave all for Christ.

9. 167 : 3-10

If we rise no higher than blind faith, the Science of healing is not attained, and Soul-existence, in the place of sense-existence, is not comprehended. We apprehend Life in divine Science only as we live above corporeal sense and correct it. Our proportionate admission of the claims of good or of evil determines the harmony of our existence, — our health, our longevity, and our Christianity.

10. 23 : 21-31

In Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and English, faith and the words corresponding thereto have these two definitions, trustfulness and trustworthiness. One kind of faith trusts one’s welfare to others.

Another kind of faith understands divine Love and how to work out one’s “own salvation, with fear and trembling.” “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief!” expresses the helplessness of a blind faith; whereas the injunction, “Believe … and thou shalt be saved!” demands self-reliant trustworthiness, which includes spiritual understanding and confides all to God.

11. 265 : 1-9

Man is the offspring, not of the lowest, but of the highest qualities of Mind. Man understands spiritual existence in proportion as his treasures of Truth and Love are enlarged. Mortals must gravitate Godward, their affections and aims grow spiritual, — they must near the broader interpretations of being, and gain some proper sense of the infinite, — in order that sin and mortality may be put off.

12. 3 : 12-16

The Divine Being must be reflected by man, — else man is not the image and likeness of the patient, tender, and true, the One “altogether lovely;” but to understand God is the work of eternity, and demands absolute consecration of thought, energy, and desire.

13. 561 : 20-21

In divine revelation, material and corporeal selfhood disappear, and the spiritual idea is understood.

14. 598 : 23-30

One moment of divine consciousness, or the spiritual understanding of Life and Love, is a foretaste of eternity. This exalted view, obtained and retained when the Science of being is understood, would bridge over with life discerned spiritually the interval of death, and man would be in the full consciousness of his immortality and eternal harmony, where sin, sickness, and death are unknown.
