Morning Prayers

Goodness never fails to receive its reward, for goodness makes life a blessing. As an active portion of one stupendous whole, goodness identifies man with universal good. Thus may each member of this church rise above the oft-repeated inquiry, What am I? to the scientific response: I am able to impart truth, health, and happiness, and this is my rock of salvation and my reason for existing.

— from Miscellany, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 165

We, to-day, in this class-room, are enough to convert the world if we are of one Mind; for then the whole world will feel the influence of this Mind; as when the earth was without form, and Mind spake and form appeared.

— from Miscellaneous Writings by Mary Baker Eddy, page 279: 27-2

Discussion points

Golden Text — “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” — Matthew 1: 23

Forum post — Emmanuel!! by Florence Roberts

The panacea for all fear is your union with God.

— from Addresses, by Martha Wilcox, page 434

Mrs. Eddy’s metaphysical approach to this suit can be seen in the directions given to someone she had asked to pray about this case: “She wanted the belief of ‘lawsuit’ handled with absolute metaphysics. I was not to outline what the verdict would be but to know that Truth would prevail and that divine Mind would direct the verdict — which it certainly did.” After Mrs. Eddy was interviewed by a court-appointed group of “Masters,” the suit was dismissed.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

— Luke 2: 9-10 from citation 3 in the Bible portion of this week’s lesson

To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings. The wakeful shepherd beholds the first faint morning beams, ere cometh the full radiance of a risen day. So shone the pale star to the prophet-shepherds; yet it traversed the night, and came where, in cradled obscurity, lay the Bethlehem babe, the human herald of Christ, Truth, who would make plain to benighted understanding the way of salvation through Christ Jesus, till across a night of error should dawn the morning beams and shine the guiding star of being. The Wisemen were led to behold and to follow this daystar of divine Science, lighting the way to eternal harmony.

The “still, small voice” of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean to the globe’s remotest bound. The inaudible voice of Truth is, to the human mind, “as when a lion roareth.” It is heard in the desert and in dark places of fear. It arouses the “seven thunders” of evil, and stirs their latent forces to utter the full diapason of secret tones. Then is the power of Truth demonstrated, — made manifest in the destruction of error.

— from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, page 559

Led by a solitary star amid the darkness, the Magi of old foretold the Messiahship of Truth. Is the wise man of to-day believed, when he beholds the light which heralds Christ’s eternal dawn and describes its effulgence?

— Citation 2 from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, page 95: 23-27

Never absent from your post, never off guard, never ill humored, never unready to work for God.

— from Miscellaneous Writings, by Mary Baker Eddy

The illumination of Mary’s spiritual sense put to silence material law and its order of generation, and brought forth her child by the revelation of Truth, demonstrating God as the Father of men. The Holy Ghost, or divine Spirit, overshadowed the pure sense of the Virgin-mother with the full recognition that being is Spirit. The Christ dwelt forever an idea in the bosom of God, the divine Principle of the man Jesus, and woman perceived this spiritual idea, though at first faintly developed.

Forum post — Appeal to Heaven by Jeremy from NJ

Spiritual causation is the one question to be considered, for more than all others spiritual causation relates to human progress. The age seems ready to approach this subject, to ponder somewhat the supremacy of Spirit, and at least to touch the hem of Truth’s garment.

— Citation 5 from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, page 170: 22-16

Forum post — The one question by Susanne from VT

The description of man as purely physical, or as both material and spiritual, — but in either case dependent upon his physical organization, — is the Pandora box, from which all ills have gone forth, especially despair. Matter, which takes divine power into its own hands and claims to be a creator, is a fiction, in which paganism and lust are so sanctioned by society that mankind has caught their moral contagion.

— Citation 5 from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, page 170: 22-16

Treatment for Pain
When mesmerized by pain, turn and say: “I know what you are. This is not pain or a belief of pain. It is a belief of m ind in matter; a lie of belief without a believer, nothingness claiming to be something. I am not afraid. I am spiritual, and so immune.” Read the definition of man in Recapitulation

— from Teaching and Addresses on Christian Science, by Edward Kimball, page 130

Do not fear anything that your present body seems to be doing. Every cell, fiber, tissue, gland, organ, or muscle of the human body exists right now in the one Mind as Idea, and each idea is proclaiming, “I am reflecting God, I am expressing God.” Every cell and fiber of my being is expressing the sovereignty of God, or proclaiming, “I AM.” (See S&H 162: 12)
